Princess Tutu

[Posted from my other fandom journal.]

So, I watched all of Princess Tutu, as per Cutter’s recommendation. Great fun.

I had two immediate responses. The first was actually “Wait! Wrong arms!”. But that’s just reflex. I’m fairly sure the reference for Tutu was Russian style, and the bulk of my own training was Checcetti. (Not that I knew this for years after, mind you.)

Oh, yeah, so SPOILERS HERE.

My other immediate response was to wonder whether the second part was planned. I can see the utter confusion and random character entrances that follow the first “ending” being deliberate–a showing-out of how the story unravels. And eventually splits, dividing into Story (prince and princess) who take off back into the fantastic, and Reality (duck and writer) who hang around and live real lives.

I could also see it being a loosely planned thing that was rushed by the producers and went off in five directions at once, only one or two of which are actually carried through.

The two possibilities look a lot the same, in practice.

Also? There are some really bad visual puns in Tutu. Like the cat teacher who is always doing (all together, now) pas de chat. I mean that was just bad.
