Cracked from Side to Side

Daisuke and Satoshi talk about painting and destiny. Drama, I-3

Hiwatari-kun smiled slightly, fingers brushing the edge of the canvas. "No. You're a true Niwa."

"But..." Daisuke looked up at him. "No Niwa has ever painted."

Hiwatari-kun snorted. "Niwas have always pursued beauty for the sake of beauty."

Hm. So…what if the Black Wings was created specifically to hunt down and/or control the other Hikari artworks? Thus, when a (speculative) Niwa came to steal it, that resonated with part of the art’s purpose–hence Dark.

I do think the anime supposition, that Black Wings was supposed to be an artwork that lived and had a soul, is probably right. But the way Dark goes hunting other art is presented to us as significant too. Which makes the way the Hikari (and Krad) hunt after Dark a mirror image, which does suit the way imagery is used in the whole story–mirrors reflecting mirrors, always things doubled and split.

Argh! This needs to be more finished! I can’t even speculate very well on the background, there isn’t enough of it!

Speculation: Black Wings was a painting, a figure of which Dark and Krad are both sort of negative images, the huge rectangle we see chained being the canvas, now blank of course since the art has escaped. The thing we see Satoshi visiting down in some Hikari basement and the vision Daisuke has after the first run-in with Krad are the same thing–this artwork.

Speculation: A Niwa came to steal the Black Wings, and a Hikari tried to stop him. In the process, the art was freed/activated/split and both the Niwa and the Hikari recieved the magic backlash which lodged one half of the soul of the art in each, bound to their dna. *shakes head over weird manga biology*

Speculation: The Hikari keep trying to capture Dark so as to recombine him with Krad and get both of them back into the painting where they can be sealed and/or destroyed. Obviously, they keep missing, quite possibly because Krad takes over before they can complete any attempt. Total lack of sympathy on the part of the Niwas probably helps with that.

Speculation: Daisuke’s ability to make art as well as just steal it is going to be crucial.

Speculation: If Riku simply accepts Dark, Dark will sleep again. If she actually loves both Daisuke and Dark, he will remain awake/extant as part of Daisuke, and may actually be laid to rest at the end of this life.

Speculation: What seems far more likely is that she will love them both, Dark will thereby have his wish granted, he and Daisuke will be able to co-exist, and he’ll still sacrifice himself to rejoin with Krad so that Krad can be sealed with him.

Speculation: Risa is going to wind up with Satoshi, because neither of them drool over the other. And she’s certainly his ideal of a girl with no secrets.

Speculation: Dark and Krad manifest/express the form of the Niwa and Hikari wishes, respectively. To possess beauty and to possess hearts–the beauty of the art created by the Hikari and the hearts of those who see the art. In the case of Krad, this seems to have fined down to wanting to possess the Hikari’s own heart.
